Het verhaal speelt zich af in een post-apocalyptisch Amerika, waarbij oorlogsveteraan Gabriel Drummer (Shia LaBeouf) wanhopig op zoek is naar de verblijfplaats van zijn vervreemde zoon Jonathan en zijn vrouw Natalie. Samen met zijn beste vriend Devin (Jai Courtney), een hardvochtige marinier wiens instinct het is om eerst de trekker over te halen en daarna pas vragen te stellen, onderschept hij een overlevende in de apocalyptische wereld die belangrijke informatie heeft over de verblijfplaats van zijn familie. Gedurende hun zoektocht wordt er teruggeblikt op het verleden dat heeft geleid tot het inmiddels door oorlog verscheurde Amerika.
