Een natuurbeschermer is met zijn gezin gestrand in een badplaats aan de kust van Newfoundland. Hij gaat in tegen de tradities en vecht tegen een hele gemeenschap om te voorkomen dat een gevangen walvis wordt afgeslacht. Alleen zijn vrouw en een van de plaatselijke bewoners steunen hem.
