Engeland, 1821. Als Lady Caroline Faye er achterkomt dat er een complot gesmeed wordt om de aantrekkelijke Lord Vane Brecon een moord in de schoenen te schuiven, gaat ze in Brecon Castle werken om hem te waarschuwen. Brecon lijkt haar niet te geloven als ze vertelt dat z’n achterneef Gervase uit is op z’n erfenis. Hij gelooft ook niet dat z’n handlangster het dienstmeisje Mrs Miller is, een mooie, rijpere vrouw die naar macht en status verlangt.
