Frankie Dunlan is een werkloze Vietnam veteraan met bijbehorende trauma's en hallucinaties, die samen met zijn zwangere vrouw in een krot woont. Bovendien heeft Frankie een gemuteerde baby, daar er jarenlang op hem geëxperimenteerd is in het ziekenhuis nadat hij terugkwam uit Vietnam. De overheid had hem zelfs opgegeven als zijnde gesneuveld in Saigon. Frankie kampt met schulden en zijn gezin heeft niets te eten. Er moet iets gebeuren...
