Oorlog gezien door de ogen van Serra, een universiteitsstudent uit Palermo die zich in 1942 vrijwillig aanmeldde om in Afrika te vechten. Hij wordt ingedeeld bij de Pavia-divisie op de zuidelijke linie in Egypte. Rommel en de As-troepen zitten vast; Het is oktober, de Britten bereiden een offensief voor. In het begin kwelden verveling, hitte, honger en dorst de Italianen; dan vallen de Britten aan, en er is geen geluk of heldhaftigheid in de dood. Uiteindelijk is het een terugtocht in verwarring. Serra, zijn sergeant Rizzo en zijn luitenant Fiori maken een laatste wandeling naar huis. Er wordt gezegd dat elke soldaat drie wonderen krijgt; als de Serra"s op zijn, wat dan?
