Oorlog gezien door de ogen van Serra, een universiteitsstudent uit Palermo die zich in 1942 vrijwillig aanmeldde om in Afrika te vechten. Hij wordt ingedeeld bij de Pavia-divisie op de zuidelijke linie in Egypte. Rommel en de As-troepen zitten vast; Het is oktober, de Britten bereiden een offensief voor. In het begin kwelden verveling, hitte, honger en dorst de Italianen; dan vallen de Britten aan, en er is geen geluk of heldhaftigheid in de dood. Uiteindelijk is het een terugtocht in verwarring.
