Romulus Ledbetter is een verwarde man die in een grot woont. Hij wordt dan ook door zijn omgeving "Caveman" genoemd. Als op een dag één van zijn dakloze vrienden dood wordt aangetroffen besluit hij zijn dochter, die politieagente is, te helpen in het onderzoek. Hij wordt hierin echter gehinderd door zijn waanideeën.
