Jack Fate is een muzikant die na een gevangenisstraf nieuw leven in zijn gestokte carrière wil blazen. Uncle Sweetheart (John Goodman) is een promotor die een popconcert probeert te organiseren voor liefdadigheid. Tom Friend (Jeff Bridges) is een uitgebluste verslaggever, aangetrokken om een verhaal te schrijven over het concert. Maar Sweetheart is niet bepaald het toonbeeld van eerlijkheid en is van plan het geld van het concert in zijn eigen zak te steken.
