Freelance journalist Paul Kemp (Johnny Depp) weet dat hij keuzes moet maken voor zijn leven en carrière, maar schuift dat moment zo ver mogelijk voor zich uit. Hij besluit naar zonnig Puerto Rico te vertrekken, om daar bij 'The San Juan Star' te gaan werken. Paul’s nieuwe, ietwat vreemde collega’s maken hem wegwijs in de wondere wereld waarover de krant dagelijks de kolommen vult. Bij gebrek aan nieuws op het ongeorganiseerde eiland komt dat er vooral op neer dat ze hun dagen slijten op het terras van hun favoriete bar. Paul kan het al snel zo goed vinden met collega Bob Sala (Michael Rispoli) dat ze huisgenoten worden. Maar dan raken ze verwikkeld in een dubieus ontwikkelingsplan van de rijke Amerikaan Sanderson (Aaron Eckhart). Dat Sanderson een bloedmooie vriendin (Amber Heard) heeft maakt het voor Kemp niet makkelijker. Haar verschijning maakt een onuitwisbare indruk op Paul’s troebele geest en zet hem er zelfs toe aan eindelijk eens een richting te kiezen.
