1928. Het zuiden van Frankrijk. Meester illusionist Stanley Crawford (Colin Firth) heeft de opdracht gekregen een fraudezaak te onderzoeken. Het gaat over een jongedame genaamd Sophie Baker die een spiritueel medium beweert te zijn (Emma Stone). Zij is ingehuurd door de rijke Catledge familie: moeder Grace en zoon Brice zijn beide onder de indruk van Sophie en haar bijzondere talent en verwachten dan ook dat zij hen in contact kan brengen met hun overleden man en vader. Vanaf het eerste moment dat Stanley het charmante medium ontmoet is hij ervan overtuigd dat zij een oplichtster is en schrijft hij alles toe op de goedgelovigheid van de familie. Maar wanneer Sophie een aantal bijzondere demonstraties geeft van haar helderziendheid, kan hij niet anders dan zich langzaam maar zeker over te geven aan deze wereld vol onverklaarbare gebeurtenissen.
