Dashiell is een chagrijnige oude man die het grootste deel van zijn tijd in zijn schuur doorbrengt. Zijn vrouw Dorothy is ongelukkig en verveelt zich. Dan gaan ze op aandringen van Dorothy bij wijze van vakantie op een treinreis waarvan de bestemming voor iedereen een verrassing is, een grote verrassing zelfs.
