Harry is een Australische soldaat tegen wil en dank. Hij ontvlucht tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog het slagveld van het westfront en vindt onderdak bij Colombe, een Franse vrouw die haar zoon heeft verloren in de oorlog. Haar man heeft haar verlaten. Ondanks hun verschillen in achtergrond, taal en leeftijd, vinden ze elkaar.
