Marseille, 1975. Pierre Michel is een jonge magistraat afkomstig uit Metz. Hij wordt aangesteld om zich met zware misdrijven bezig te houden. Hij besluit zich vast te bijten in de French Connection, een maffia-organisatie die heroïne over de hele wereld verdeelt. Michel trekt op zijn eentje ten strijde tegen Gaëtan Zampa, boegbeeld van de onderwereld en onaantastbare misdaadkoning. Maar Michel zal snel ondervinden dat hij zijn methodes zal moeten aanpassen indien hij succesvol wil zijn.
