Zusters Michelle, Irene en Barbara krijgen de opdracht de blijde boodschap te gaan verkondigen buiten de kloostermuren. Hun uitvalsbasis wordt de praktijk van dokter Jack Carpenter, gelegen in één van de probleemwijken van New York. De jong nonnetjes willen zo snel mogelijk het vertrouwen winnen van de buurtbewoners en besluiten hun habijt te ruilen voor moderne jurken.
