Charles Vallorba is een gedesillusioneerde schrijver en vlucht na een mislukt huwelijk naar een appartement in een Zuid-Franse provinciestad. Een telefoontje, bestemd voor de vorige bewoner, maakt de journalist in hem wakker en brengt hem op het spoor van een plaatselijk politiek schandaal, waarbij oudere dames zijn vermoord om hun vastgoed en grond te bemachtigen.
