In de eerste jaren van de Tweede Wereldoorlog voert de Royal Navy een wanhopige strijd om de Atlantische konvooiroutes open te houden voor de bevoorrading van de Britse eilanden, waarbij ze wordt geconfronteerd met het grote gevaar dat uitgaat van de vele Duitse oorlogsschepen, zoals de admiraal Graf Spee, die speuren de oceaan af op zoek naar vrachtschepen om te zinken.
