Het verhaal speelt zich af tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog op een door de Amerikanen bezet tropisch eiland. Een Franse plantage-eigenaar (Brazzi) en een sprankelende marine-zuster (Gaynor) worden op elkaar verliefd. Maar de oorlog is voor hen helaas nooit ver weg.
