De schatrijke William Parrish krijgt bezoek van De Dood in de vorm van de verongelukte Joe Black. Per toeval heeft William's mooie dochter Susan de mysterieuze Joe al vlak voor zijn ongeval ontmoet. Het was Joe's bedoeling om William weg te halen, maar nu hij zelf kennis maakt met het gevoel van liefde krijgt hij meer interesse in het leven op aarde.
