De Britse Adela gaat naar het koloniale India om haar vriend te bezoeken en met hem te trouwen. Als een van de weinige Britten is ze geinteresseerd in de inheemse bevolking. Wanneer ze samen met de uit India afkomstige Aziz op picknick gaat beschuldigt ze hem van verkrachting.
