Een schrijver, Morton Rainey, heeft zich teruggetrokken in zijn buitenverblijf aan de oevers van Tashmore Lake, nadat zijn vrouw is vreemdgegaan. Op een dag arriveert er een man, John Shooter genaamd, die Morton ervan beschuldigt zijn verhaal te hebben gestolen. Morton tracht de man ervan te overtuigen dat dit echt niet het geval is, en probeert hem het originele verhaal te laten zien, dat twee jaar eerder geschreven is dan Shooter's verhaal. Op de één of andere manier lukt het hem echter niet het origineel te vinden en beginnen er vreemde dingen te gebeuren...
