Luitenant Franta Slama is een top piloot bij de Tsjechische luchtmacht die de opdracht krijgt om een veelbelovende jonge vlieger, Karel Vojtisek, op te leiden en ze worden al snel vrienden. Wanneer nazi-Duitsland in 1939 Tsjecho-Slowakije binnenvalt, verwerpen ze allebei het gezag van hun nieuwe leiders en ontsnappen ze naar Engeland, waar ze zich aansluiten bij andere Tsjechische ballingen in de RAF. Tijdens een missie boven Engeland stort Karel neer en stuit op de boerderij van Susan, een jonge vrouw wiens man bij de marine zit. Karel valt al snel als een blok voor Susan, maar terwijl ze genieten van een korte affaire, besluit Susan na verloop van tijd dat ze de voorkeur geeft aan het gezelschap van de oudere en meer wereldse Franta. Terwijl Franta en Karel worstelen om hun vriendschap te behouden, ondanks hun romantische rivaliteit.
