Het verhaal gaat over Iris' opkomst tot de top van een liefdes-/machtsdriehoek met haar guitige Engelse minnaar, McHeath, en Art, een serieuze jonge bokser. Binnen het gebrekkige morele landschap worstelt elk personage om zijn soevereiniteit te vestigen.
