Het verhaal van de jonge bandiet Bob Muldoon (Casey Affleck). Bob ontsnapt uit de gevangenis en trekt door het Texaanse platteland om zich te herenigen met zijn vrouw Ruth Guthrie (Rooney Mara) en zijn dochter die hij nog nooit heeft gezien. Onderweg begint het verleden hem echter in te halen.
