Na bijna 20 jaar gaat Andy Taylor (Andy Griffith) terug naar Mayberry om zijn oude baan van sheriff weer op te nemen. Hij wil zijn huidige baan bij de U.S. Mail opzeggen. Maar zijn oude post als sheriff is bezet door zijn vroegere hulpje Barney Fife (Don Knotts). Deze wil na lange tijd eindelijk met Thelma Lou (Bettye Lynn) trouwen.
