Balthazar gaat naar een privéschool in New York, waar hij zijn avonden doorbrengt met het performatief veroordelen van wapengeweld voor een ringlicht, voornamelijk in de hoop indruk te maken op zijn geliefde. Maar wanneer Balthazar een reeks alarmerende berichten ontvangt van een online trol die mogelijk zelf een schietpartij op school plant, reist hij naar Texas om de commentator te confronteren. Daar ontmoet hij Solomon, een getroebleerde jongeman die ontslagen is, schulden heeft bij een piramidespel en een klein wapenarsenaal bezit.
