Als Timothy Dunphy voor de zoveelste keer in aanvaring komt met de wet, wordt hij door zijn strenge vader naar een prep-school in Cornwall, Connecticut gestuurd, zodat hij zich kan voorbereiden op zijn studie. Op zijn nieuwe school voelt hij zich echter niet zo goed thuis, en heeft het binnen de kortste keren aan de stok met de directeur. Gelukkig maakt hij kennis met de mooie Jane, met wie hij een hoop tijd doorbrengt. Timothy begint langzaam te beseffen dat het tijd wordt om volwassen te worden, maar dat het minstens even belangrijk is om te weten hoe je een goede joint moet rollen.
