Helmuth Hübener, een 16-jarige jongen, vormt samen met zijn vrienden Karl en Rudi een verzetsgroep nadat hij getuige is geweest van de arrestatie van zijn Joodse vriend door de nazi's. Gewapend met niets anders dan een typemachine en de waarheid voeren ze een stille oorlog tegen Hitlers regime. Ze ontcijferen vijandelijke berichten, smokkelen geheime informatie en ontmantelen het nazi-imperium van binnenuit. Hun moedige daden leiden ertoe dat ze terecht komen te staan voor het hooggerechtshof van nazi-Duitsland.
