In 1941 begint de aristocratische Krystyna Skarbek aan haar eerste avontuur als spionne voor de Britten: ze skiet over de bergen naar het door de nazi's bezette Polen. Haar missie is om zich bij het Poolse verzet te voegen en inlichtingen op microfilmrollen naar buiten te smokkelen. Ze is ook van plan om haar joodse moeder - die haar toevlucht heeft gezocht in een kerk in Warschau - uit Polen te halen.
