Nadat haar echtgenoot na de Tweede Wereldoorlog niet terugkeerde van het front, woont Grace in een afgesloten landhuis samen met haar zoon en dochter. De twee kinderen zijn overgevoelig voor zonlicht en ze leven volgens strikte regels: de gordijnen moeten gesloten blijven en er mag geen deur geopend worden voordat de vorige gesloten is. Als het vaste personeel van de ene op de andere dag verdwijnt en Grace drie nieuwe bediendes aanneemt, beginnen er onverklaarbare dingen te gebeuren. Ze ontdekt dat de werelden van de levenden en de doden in hun huis door elkaar heen lopen, maar de hele waarheid is nog veel huiveringwekkender dan dat.
