Op het woeste eiland Berk, waar Vikingen en draken al generaties lang de grootste vijanden zijn, is Hiccup een buitenbeentje. De vindingrijke, onopvallende zoon van stamhoofd Stoick the Vast verbreekt een eeuwenoude traditie als hij bevriend raakt met Toothless, een gevreesde Helleveeg-draak. Door hun onwaarschijnlijke band komt de ware aard van draken naar boven wordt de hele Viking-gemeenschap op zijn kop gezet. Met de stoere en ambitieuze Astrid en de eigenzinnige smid van het dorp Gobber aan zijn zij, gaat Hiccup de confrontatie aan met een wereld die verdeeld is door angst en onbegrip. Als een oude dreiging de kop opsteekt, waardoor zowel Vikingen als draken gevaar lopen, blijkt Hiccups vriendschap met Toothless de sleutel tot een nieuwe toekomst. Samen moeten ze proberen de vrede terug te brengen. Ze zweven voorbij de grenzen van hun wereld en geven een nieuwe kijk op wat het inhoudt om een held en een leider te zijn.
