New York. Jerry Falk is een jonge komedieschrijver die van zijn grote doorbraak droomt. Hij wordt gesteund door zijn mentor David Dobel, met wie hij veel wandelingen door Central Park maakt en dan praat over alles wat hen bezighoudt. Amanda is een zelfzuchtige vrije geest die mannen helemaal gek maakt. Jerry en Amanda vallen voor elkaar en gaan samenwonen, maar hebben veel tijd nodig om hun complexe relatie uit te werken. Die taak is normaal gesproken al moeilijk genoeg voor beginnende koppels, maar wordt nu dubbel zo zwaar omdat Amanda’s moeder bij hen komt wonen in hun kleine appartement.
