In het Australië van de jaren zeventig wordt het leven van Grace geteisterd door tegenslag en verlies. Nadat hun moeder tijdens de zwangerschap overlijdt, worden zij en haar tweelingbroer Gilbert opgevoed door hun vader Percy: een verlamde, alcoholische voormalig jongleur. Ondanks een leven vol liefde slaat de tragedie opnieuw toe als Percy in zijn slaap overlijdt. De broers en zussen worden met geweld gescheiden en in aparte huizen gestopt.
