Een weduwnaar met drie jonge kinderen, van wie de oudste het huishouden bestiert, heeft drie jaar eerder zijn financiële reserves uitgegeven aan de vergeefse operaties voor zijn vrouw. Nu werkt hij zich uit de naad, met uitzicht op promotie. Veel thuis is hij niet, maar van alle afwezige vaders is hij een van de amusantste: de bedverhaaltjes voor zijn kleinste laat hij achter op een cassettebandje en dan vindt hij ook zelf, op miraculeuze wijze, de dood. Dat wil zeggen: voordat hij naar het hiernamaals vertrekt, mag hij nog enkele dagen - als een slechts in duisternis zichtbaar spook - rondwaren om zijn zaakjes op orde te krijgen.
