Luitenant John Boyd wordt tijdens de Mexicaans-Amerikaanse oorlog weggepromoveerd naar een verlaten militaire post in Californië, waar de verdere aanwezige militairen allemaal wel één of meerdere schroeven los hebben zitten. Op een avond wordt het bonte gezelschap opgeschrikt door de verkleumde zwerver Colqhoun die hen een ijselijk verhaal weet te vertellen.
