1941. Annette, een twintigjarige studente aan de kunstacademie ontmoet Jean. Ze houden van elkaar en leven een onbezorgd leven. Maar de Duitse bezetting wordt strenger. Annette is joods en de antisemitische ouders van haar verloofde blijken er alles aan te doen om hun verbintenis te verhinderen.
