De documentaire volgt een poolvossenpaar dat wordt gescheiden wanneer het mannetje vast komt te zitten op een stuk losgeraakt ijs. Zijn hoogzwangere partner moet alleen zien te overleven, terwijl honger en roofdieren dichterbij komen. Het familiedrama brengt de poolvossen in contact met een groot aantal andere Arctische dieren, waaronder lemmingen, ijsberen, rode vossen, poolwolven en nertsen.
