Ze zijn nauwelijks 30 centimeter groot en wegen amper één kilogram. Ze leven in de Zuid-Afrikaanse Kalahari woestijn in een gebied van drie vierkante kilometer en voeden zich met wormen, insecten en kleine reptielen. Ze zijn wilde stokstaartjes en de hoofdrolspelers in de documentaire: 'The Meerkats'.
