Tijdens een lange, hete zomer ontmoeten twee 16-jarige meisjes uit hetzelfde Yorkshire-dorp elkaar. Ze zijn totaal verschillend maar toch voelen ze een verbondenheid. Mona heeft een moeilijke jeugd achter de rug en verlangt naar een ander leven zonder de dagelijkse sleur. Tamsin is vrolijk en van goede komaf, maar heeft ook een sombere en rebelse kant. Gefascineerd maar ook in de war, beseft Mona onmiddellijk dat er een nieuwe tijd voor haar is aangebroken.
