De jaren zeventig. Joe Fine is een charismatische en levenslustige man, die met zijn familie verhuist van Brooklyn naar New Orleans. Zijn vrouw Stella, een overlevende van de holocaust, en hij hebben samen twee dochters: Nathalie en Maddie. Helaas voor de familie is Joe's uitgavepatroon nogal royaal en staat het niet in verhouding tot de realiteit. Zo balanceert zijn kledingbedrijf op de grens van een faillissement. Iets wat Joe weigert in te zien.
