Wanneer de Tweede Wereldoorlog uitbreekt, zijn Alfred, een pasgetrouwde vader van drie kinderen uit de arbeidersklasse in Bergen, en zijn jeugdvriend aan het werk op een koopvaardijschip in het midden van de Atlantische Oceaan. Plotseling bevinden ze zich in de frontlinie, vechtend in burgerkleding, zonder wapens, omdat hun schip het doelwit is van Duitse onderzeeërs. Tegelijkertijd volgen we Alfreds vrouw en kinderen thuis in Bergen en hun dagelijkse leven in oorlogstijd.
