Nadat medisch student Michael voor zijn terminaal zieke moeder heeft gezorgd, gaat hij in een verpleegtehuis werken. Bewoonster Esther Huish gebruikt haar eigen verleden om hem waardevolle lessen bij te brengen. Door hun groeiende vriendschap herontdekt Michael zichzelf en gaat hij weer in het leven geloven. Maar voor zijn levenslessen over zijn, vraagt Esther nog een laatste gunst aan Michael.
