Parijs, 1942. De Algerijnse immigrant Younes wordt tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog door de politie opgepakt en vreest voor zijn leven. Hij krijgt echter het aanbod om de Parijse moskee te bewaken in ruil voor zijn leven. Dit is zijn enige overlevingskans. Onverwacht wordt hij daar bevriend met de Joodse zanger Salim. Deze overtuigt hem om in het verzet te gaan en ondanks de risico's keert Younes zich tegen de politie.
