Stanley Ipkiss is een bankmedewerker die constant wordt vernederd bij confrontaties, en niet voor zichzelf durft op te komen. Na één van de ergste dagen uit z'n leven vindt hij een masker. Wanneer hij het masker opzet komt zijn binnenste ik boven: een cartoon-achtige, romantische en wilde man. Een misdaadbaas gaat achter Ipkiss aan, nadat een vriend van hem dankzij hem de dood vindt.
