De oplichter Robert Freegard doet zich voor als lid van de Britse geheime dienst MI5. Hij weet zijn slachtoffers ervan te overtuigen onder te duiken. Bij zijn volgende slachtoffer Alice Archer verkoopt hij zogenaamd auto's. De twee kunnen het goed met elkaar vinden en spreken af. Alice heeft echter haar bedenkingen bij zijn persona en duikt in zijn verleden.
