In het Victoriaanse Engeland raakt een jonge bioloog verstrikt in een web van overspelige relaties tussen familieleden onderling, als hij de oudste dochter van een oud, respectabel geslacht huwt. Hij is een vreemde eend in de bijt en zijn gedrag verstoort het wankele evenwicht dat alleen maar in stand gehouden kan worden als eenieder zich aan de regels houdt.
