Het leven van de bijna 19 jaar oude Marius (Horst Buchholz), woonachtig in Marseille, is in een sleur geraakt. Alles in zijn leven wordt gepland door zijn café-bezittende vader. Hij besluit een 5 jarige reis over zee te gaan maken. Maar de nacht voordat hij vertrekt ontmoet hij buurmeisje Fanny (Leslie Caron). Zij vertelt hem dat zij verliefd op hem is, en hij ontdekt dat het wederzijds is. Hij moet kiezen tussen het opwindende leven op zee of de rest van zijn leven slijten met Fanny.
