Halverwege de 19e eeuw vestigt een vrouw zich in Wyoming op een ranch nadat ze is vrijgesproken van moord op haar man. Als de echtgenoot van Josie is begraven begint zij in haar eentje een schapenfarm. Dit tot ongenoegen van de plaatselijke bullebak, een grootgrondbezitter.
