Het IJslandse koppel, Maria en haar man Ingvar, woont samen met hun schapen op een mooie maar zeer afgelegen boerderij. Wanneer ze een mysterieuze pasgeborene ontdekken op hun erf besluiten ze het te houden en op te voeden als hun eigen vlees en bloed. Dit onverwachte vooruitzicht als nieuw gezin brengt hen veel vreugde, maar zal hen uiteindelijk ook vernietigen.
