Napels in de jaren tachtig Fabietto Schisa, een ongemakkelijke tiener, woont met zijn excentrieke en kleurrijke familie. Maar zijn dagelijkse leven staat plotseling op zijn kop als Diego Maradona, de mondiale voetballegende, in Napels arriveert en hem op miraculeuze wijze redt van een verschrikkelijk ongeluk. Deze onverwachte ontmoeting met de voetbalster zal bepalend zijn voor de toekomst van de jongeman. Met The Hand of God keert Sorrentino terug naar zijn geboortestad om zijn meest persoonlijke film te maken, waarin lot en familie, sport en film, liefde en verloren illusies samenkomen.
