Mrs. Ross is een oudere, eenzame dame die zich allerlei wezentjes verbeeldt in haar paranoïde fantasie. Ze vertelt de wezentjes ('whisperers') dat ze hen doorheeft en licht de politie in, die haar vervolgens uitlacht achter haar rug. Naast dat ze zich wezentjes inbeeldt, heeft ze ook het idee dat ze erfgename is van een adellijke familie. Haar hele dagelijkse routine komt op z'n kop te staan wanneer haar criminele zoon thuiskomt.
