Mikey is een middelbare scholier die vastbesloten is om een pro-skater te worden. Zijn vader Oliver gelooft dat hij het beste voor Mikey wil. Zijn wens is dat zijn zoon naar de universiteit gaat en de "traditionele" route van het leven na de adolescentie volgt. Mikey probeert een balans te vinden door tijd door te brengen met zijn twee beste vrienden, Jay en Adolf, een carrière in skateboarden na te streven en een relatie op te bouwen met Rachel, het meisje waarvoor hij valt. De vader-zoonrelatie tussen Oliver en Mikey lijdt hier echter onder.
